“Where focus goes, energy flows. And where energy flows, whatever you're focusing on grows. In other words, your life is controlled by what you focus on. That's why you need to focus on where you want to go, not on what you fear.” Tony Robbins
I’ve been listening to Tony Robbins a bit lately and he talks a lot about ENERGY. How life occurs is directly related to your energy and where you are directing your focus. What we focus on grows so it’s important to get clear about what you are focusing on. Our energy flows in the direction we focus. Begin by noticing your patterns of focus; do you focus on what you are grateful for or on what is lacking? Are you focusing on what’s working or on what’s not working? What are the habits that may be keeping you locked in “not enough” or not able to have what you want?
Yoga and meditation can be key activities to help you effectively learn to focus your energy. Meditation can allow you to quiet your mind to actually see what you are thinking and where your are focusing your energy. It’s a wonderful tool of self awareness. Yoga also helps hone your skill in focusing by using “drishti,” or a gaze point, in each and every pose to direct your monkey mind to one point. When you quiet your thoughts you allow breakthrough or “ah-ha” moments to come through. Thoughts and ideas may come that you hadn’t thought of before because you’ve taken your focus off the problem and allowed a space for something new.
Here are a few meditations you can try:
focus (only 5 minutes!)
This week, when practicing yoga (or doing any repetitive task), notice where your attention is going and bring it back gently to the present moment. Disrupt your thoughts when you find yourself drifting away and notice something new in the space. This is training for putting your focus on what you want. It starts by noticing where your attention keeps going and bring it back.
